The Kelvinized Dance intensive workshop provides a view of contemporary modern dance from a choreographer and dance educator who is grounded in African American dance art and culture, and who has worked prolifically for institutions that advocate and produce European dance culture and art. As a result, the Kelvinized training bridges European and Black dance perspectives. This dance genre’s adaptability makes it paradoxical; it is, and it isn’t, because it is always becoming what it needs to be in a particular moment or situation. The development and success of generations of different types of professional dancers and dance lovers, young and mature, who have participated in this training system provide proof of concept. The workshop participants learn to support their dancing with the fundamentals of movement, how to differentiate between important styles and techniques (what’s in the mix and why), combinations and choreography that delve into the aspects of storytelling, expression and performance from different dance esthetics. Ultimately, the process aspires to provide insights and guidelines for the participants on their own journeys toward authentic expression, as well as enriching their dance perspective and range.
