Training for Dancers
Sören Niewelt started his dance education at the John Neumeier Ballet School in Hamburg and finished it at the Australian Ballet School. Upon graduating he joined the Australian Ballet before returning to Europe and becoming a principal dancer with Ballet Ireland. Years of guesting as a soloist in Brazil, Japan and Europe followed before he started his own company, the JSLN Dance Company. His very first choreography was premiered at a choreographic evening at marameo, Berlin in October, 2012.
The style is a strong, neoclassical one, with emphasis on sharp lines in the limbs yet a supple spine and quick, precise footwork. Sören’s class is thus arranged, to prepare the dancers for his work.
S-Line, as he calls his technique, focuses on the use of the spine during all classical movement and incorporates momentum, dynamics and spatial awareness usually more commonly found in contemporary dance, within his ballet exercises. Ballet dancers as well as contemporary dancers benefit greatly from this approach and find new meeting grounds within the combined approach to movement.
