Bio

Nelody Ahlroth (born 1989 in Finland) is a Berlin-based dance artist, choreographer and director from Finland. Her work is inspired by different dance styles and art forms and deeply rooted in hip-hop and “urban dance”: a wide range of other street dance styles that have their origins in different social and cultural dance forms of the African diaspora. For Nelody, dance is a way of expressing ourselves, communicating, finding our individual voice and telling our stories. It is a way to connect with ourselves and others and celebrate those connections.

With a background in classical music, piano and theater, Nelody began her dance career with musicals in 2005. She discovered hip-hop in 2008, learned about contemporary dance shortly after and graduated as a professional contemporary dancer in 2014. As a dancer and performer, she has worked at the Staatstheater Nürnberg and in the LAVAMOVER Contemporary Dance Company, among others, as well as freelancing for various events and dance theater productions as a dancer and performer. In the world of street dance, she has many years of experience in participating in various competitions, e.g. Finnish Hip Hop Championships and ‘Berlin Street Dance Championships’. As a choreographer and movement artist she has worked in international productions for commercials (e.g. SEAT, Opel, AOK), as well as with various musicians, music videos and short films (e.g. Tora, Lostboi Lino, Mentrix) and in collaborations with filmmakers and other artists. She was the artistic director and co-author of ‘The Journey’, a dance theater production for children at the Flying Steps Academy, which premiered in February 2020.

She has also taught and choreographed at and for the following institutions, among others Junge Deutsche Oper, Flying Steps Academy, TanzZeit, Danceteam International and sPERANTO WORLDWIDE.
